A brief history

A lot has happened in Belgium and in the world since 1969.
The energy, electricity and nuclear electricity sectors
in particular have changed significantly.

SYNATOM has continually adapted to changes in the context,
particularly legal ones.


Some key dates

1969

Creation of SYNATOM

2003

Adoption of the nuclear phase-out act. SYNATOM becomes the nuclear provisioning company. The Nuclear Provisions Commission is created.

2013-2015

First the Tihange 1 reactor, and then Doel 1 and 2 are granted an operating extension to run for 50 years in total.

2022

The framework governing nuclear provisions and the prerogatives of the Nuclear Provisions Commission is strengthened.

2023

An agreement is reached between the ENGIE Group and the Belgian government about the 10-year extension of the Doel 4 and Tihange 3 reactors.

2025

Closing of the agreement between the ENGIE group and the Belgian state.
